Split Pea and Ham soup (also known as Erwtensoep or Snert), is the meal my grandmother would make on a bitterly cold winter afternoon. The soup had to be so thick a spoon could stand upright in it. Served with a warm crusty bread, it is exactly the one-dish meal that will keep you warm and cozy. Just add some stock, if you prefer it a bit lighter.
